Threads
Anne Lindberg and H. L. Hix
6 September - 18 December, 2016
curated by Susan Wides
'T' Space is pleased to present Threads, a site-responsive installation by artist Anne Lindberg and poet H. L. Hix, curated by Susan Wides and conceived for the light-responsive Archive Gallery designed by Steven Holl. The project marks a significant evolution in Lindberg's practice through the integration of language as a co-equal presence within the work, realized in dialogue with Hix's poetic voice. Set within the distinctive spatial context of Holl's architecture, the installation extends Lindberg's exploration of light, perception, and material into an interdisciplinary field where visual and verbal threads converge.
At the heart of Threads is a synthesis of sculpture, poetry, and architecture—a dialogue that has long animated the mission of 'T' Space. The exhibition follows earlier collaborations that have brought visual art and poetry into conversation at 'T' Space, including Richard Tuttle and Mei-mei Berssenbrugge's Hello, The Roses (2015}, and Brice Marden's Cold Mountain Drawings (2019), in dialogue with the poetry of Hanshan, also known as Cold Mountain. Threads carries this exploration forward through the collaboration between Lindberg and Hix.
Almost from the beginning of their lives as makers, Anne Lindberg and H. L. Hix have informed one another's creative process. Across more than thirty years, books, notes, and images have passed between them, silently building affinity, attunement, and history. Collaborations in the 1990s and again in 2015 marked moments of especially active interchange in this artistic friendship.
Developed through a recent period of daily
correspondence, Threads emerges from this sustained artistic exchange. Lindberg draws thousands of fine, colored threads across the volume of the gallery, forming suspended tonal planes of color and light that shift with changing daylight. Hix's concise verbal "threads" appear as light-catching, three-dimensional text in Plexiglas on the walls. Material and linguistic threads move in parallel, creating an environment in which seeing and reading unfold together.
Visitors are invited to walk beneath and around a pair of suspended thread sculptures, experiencing the work through duration and perceptual awareness as natural light animates both material and text. Meaning is not fixed or illustrative; rather, it is carried across visual and verbal threads, formed through attention, movement, and time.
Underlying Threads is Ludwig Wittgenstein's declaration, “What can be shown cannot be said”—an idea central to Lindberg and Hix's decades-long dialogue and to the relationship between seeing and language that unfolds throughout the installation.
